On Monday, some members set off for Gluepot Station, while the remainder proceeded over the river from Mannum to Ponde. A Birds of Prey and Wombat Awareness centre has been established there on a property overlooking the river. Our first sighting was a Little Eagle soaring over the adjacent paddocks.
The proprietors' cottage is occupied by numerous wombats recovering from various traumas, some birds of prey, also convalescent: a Barn Owl … and a Peregrine Falcon.
These two vied for the foster parent's attention.
This Peregrine has recovered from its injuries and is being educated to fend for itself in the wild, rewarded with tidbits.
Inside the cottage wombats ruled: if not slumbering …
… they were lumbering about exploring or feeding.
We moved on through Murray Bridge to Brown's Road, Monarto South, for lunch. A short sortie into the diverse scrub there confirmed that a later visit would be well worthwhile.
